Re: Opposition to Leland Yee’s “Certificate of Recognition of 64th National Day of Viet Nam” for Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Dated September 2, 2009

Dear Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger / Lt. Gov-Elect Gavin Newsom / Sen. Leland Y. Yee:

We are writing this Protest and Petition Letter jointly and severally to each of your Offices to oppose and condemn your acts surrounding September 2, 2009 event to the Consulate General of Vietnam, headquartered in San Francisco , California .

With regards to this event, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger sent a letter of “Greetings” addressed to the celebrants of Vietnamese Independence Day which state: “Today we celebrate our Vietnamese American residents for their contributions to our Golden State . You enrich our communities and enhance California ’s blossoming diversity. It is an honor to join you in commemorating this special occasion”.

With regards to the same event, Mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom sent a “Proclamation” which state in part: “WHEREAS, in observance of Vietnam’s National Day, we recognize Vietnamese Heritage Day in San Francisco, by celebrating the significant role our Vietnamese community plays in our City’s success, growth, and prosperity; and WHEREAS, we commemorate the deep friendship that exists between our City and the people of Vietnam, with the support of the Consulate General of Vietnam, under the leadership of the Honorable Quoc Hung Le, Consul General of Vietnam, for their efforts to promote positive dialogue between the two regions…”

At the same time, Senator Leland Y. Yee sent a “Certificate of Recognition of 64th National Day of Viet Nam” which state: “The California State Senate honors and recognizes Le Quoc Hung on the occasion of the 64th National Day of Viet Nam . We commend his dedication to bridging the gap between California and Vietnam , and applaud his exemplary service to our community. We further wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.”

These documents addressed to the Vietnam Consulate in San Francisco have been posted on their website: www.vietnamconsulate-sf.org.

It is entirely inappropriate and highly offensive to our community for our duly elected officials who are accountable to their Vietnamese American electorates to “celebrate, commemorate, honor” or otherwise recognize September 2 as “Vietnamese National / Heritage Day” because Vietnamese Americans as refugees from Communist Vietnam have never and will never “celebrate, commemorate, honor” or otherwise recognize this day. We do not recognize the government or leadership of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam , an illegitimate government which through force of arms overran the Republic of Vietnam , an independent democracy, of which most all Vietnamese Americans were a former citizen of. Your acts which we protest here, contradict the values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights that our community has always advocated for.

Thus, we demand immediate public retraction of your Letters to the Consulate General of Vietnam in San Francisco , mentioned above. We will continue to rally our community to inform our elected officials and representatives as to these matters.

Sincerely,

Duc H. Vu (signed)
