Miss Ngoc Lua undergoing treatment at the hospital
Miss Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lua, member of the Vietnamese Women For Human Rights group, was bashed on the head by a police officer at Phu My police station and suffering from head injuries, cauing her to vomit, feeling dizzy, having severe headaches and trouble recognizing family members.
On the 26/08/2014, Miss Ngoc Lua together with many friends traveled to
Cao Lanh, Dong Thap, to attend the trial of human rights activists Bui
Thi Minh Hang, Nguyen Thi Thuy and Nguyen Van Minh. She and several
others were arrested by the police and taken to Phu My Police Station
for detention.
Upon arriving at the police station, Miss Ngoc Lua was still very
healthy and happy, as seen in a photo taken with 2 other friends there
(see picture below, Ngoc Lua is the one wearing glasses).
Afternoon 26/08/2014, Phu My police started to single each person for
questioning. When it was Miss Ngoc Lua 's turn, during the
interrogation, a police officer bashed her head really hard across the
temple, causing her to faint and collapsed to the ground. There was
report that she may have been bleeding from the ear.
She was taken to Huu Nghi Hospital but while still unconscious. Arriving
there she came to but complained of severe headaches, vomiting and
having difficulty recognizing people. She was checked over but was not
given any treatment, and was discharged when still having head pains,
nausea, twitching of muscles and unable to walk straight.
Concerned that she has suffered head injuries from the beating, her
family and friends took her back to Saigon to People Hospital 115,
address: Address: 527 Su Van Hanh, 12th Ward, District 10, Ho Chi Minh
City, Vietnam, Phone: +84 38652368.
Her family reported that there were police officers following them the
whole time, even in the hospital, keeping a close watch on everybody.
Miss Ngoc Lua's brother said he felt scared and unsafe, and is asking on
Facebook for help from friends.
When Miss Ngoc Lua arrived at the hospital in the morning, the doctors
at 115 Hospital refused to do a CT scan of her brain, claiming that all 4
CT machines were broken down! At the same time! Incredible coincidence
or deliberate lies under order from the police? Most likely the latter.
Her friends and family had to really fight for her treatment and not
until late in the evening that she was given the scan and some blood
test, which apparently showed partial brain contusion, low blood sugar
level, low calcium and unstable mental state. She is to remain in
hospital for observation.
Miss Ngoc Lua 's family is very poor financially. Her father is already
in Xuan Loc prison in Dong Nai with a 4 years sentence for advocating
for human rights and for speaking out against the government. He was
sentenced according to No 258 Criminal Laws in 2011.
Her family is very worried that they will not have enough money to pay
for the hospital fee, and whether or not the hospital will give her
proper treatments. They are appealing to friends and those concerned for
help.
