Anyone who has ever lived under a totalitarian regime, such as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, understands that he lives under tyranny; and that his fundamental inalienable rights—freedom of speech and religion—are at the mercy of the Communist Party and its enforcers.
As Vietnamese refugees, many of us experienced first hand the loss of our civil and human rights before escaping the clutches of communism.As Americans, we are deeply troubled by the tolerance shown by the communist regime in Vietnam toward human trafficking and rampant abuse of children as cheap labor under dangerous working conditions, or worse, as slaves in the sex trade.
As Californians, we are deeply offended by and we strongly object to the California-Asia Business Council’s partnership with a regime that continues to repress its citizens and violate basic human rights such as freedom of speech, press, religion, movement and association; and now allows this regime to promote its propaganda here in our State.
If the regime of communist Vietnam wants to forge stronger business ties with American companies, they must first demonstrate sincere respect toward the people of Vietnam and for international standards of human rights and decency.
TOGETHER, WE MUST MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
