THE mother of a newborn rescued over the weekend from a toilet pipe in China "deeply regrets what she did," police say.

Police in Jinhua, in Zhejiang province said the mother - an unnamed 22-year-old - said she had hidden her pregnancy and claimed the baby fell into the lavatory after she unexpectedly gave birth.

"Local police have found the mother. She deeply regrets what she did. Details of the case are still under investigation," Jinhua police said on the social media website Weibo, CNN reports.

Earlier, polcie said the woman  could face charges of attempted murder.

"The woman was on the scene during the entire rescue process... and admitted she was the mother when we asked her," a policeman has been quoted as saying.

He said police were still investigating whether she had any "malicious intentions" before deciding on charges.

The child - a 2.5kg boy - was rescued from a sewage pipe in an apartment building after being flushed down a toilet.

Neighbours in the building called firefighters after hearing the two-day-old baby crying in the fourth-floor squat lavatory.

Attempts to pull him out failed, so rescuers sawed away a section of the 10cm diameter pipe with the baby inside and took him to a local hospital.

The child has been named "Baby 59", after the incubator he was placed in at Pujiang County People's Hospital.

He is in a stable condition, with bruising on his head.

The incident has succeeded in outraging a country in which brutal acts against youngsters are common.

Hundreds of thousands of Chinese people took to Weibo - their version of Twitter - to vent their fury at the mother.

News of the rescue also prompted an outpouring of help from locals who came to the hospital armed with nappies, baby clothes, powdered milk and even offers to adopt the child.

Nurse Zhang Songhe told the Daily Mail that the mother of the baby was with him in hospital. "I don't know the reason she abandoned the baby," she said.

"We're going to take care of the baby. We are not sure when the baby can be discharged."
